Sparks in the Night in NFFTY's Centerpiece Shorts and "Best OF"

April 2010: The National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) has selected Sparks in the Night for screening in the Centerpiece Shorts program at 7:30 on May 1st in Seattle's SIFF Cinema. The film will also screen for free in the Seattle Center House as part of "Best of NFFTY: 2007-2010".

The Sunday, April 25th, Seattle Times includes a great article about NFFTY with some quotes from Ben.

This is Ben's fourth year and fifth film in NFFTY. Last year, Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave, made when Ben was 12, won NFFTY's HBO-sponsored trip to-Hollywood.

Winter & Spring Festivals:

(Update #4)

Newport Beach Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, Nashville Film Festival, Santa Cruz Film Festival, da Vinci (Oregon), Faux Film Festival (Portland), Best of CouchFest (Seattle)

 

The Newport Beach Film Festival in California will screen Sparks in the Night as part of its Youth Film Showcase. The screening is on April 25th. Last year, Newport Beach selected A Friendly Game.

The da Vinci film festival in Corvallis, Oregon, has awarded Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave an Honorable Mention in their Young Filmmakers division. The film will screen three times, on March 12, 13, & 14th.

On Sunday, February 7, Sparks in the Night screened at Best Of Couch Fest. The free screening was at the Northwest Film Forum's theater.

Sparks in the Night will screen at the Faux Film Festival in Portland. The festival runs from April 2 to April 4th. The festival celebrates mocumentaries, parodies, and satire.

Out of more than 2200 entries, Sparks in the Night was among the films selected for screening at the Nashville Film Festival. The festival is April 15-22.

Sparks in the Night will screen at the Santa Cruz Film Festival in May. The festival seeks "independent-minded filmmakers and artists who produce culturally relevant and ideologically challenging work."

The 53rd Annual San Francisco International Film Festival will be April 22–May 6, 2010 and will include Sparks in the Night. The festival is the longest-running film festival in the Americas.

 

Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave and Sparks in the Night win Regional Scholastic Gold Keys

March 2010: The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers has awarded gold keys to two Slugco films. These are the Alliance's highest regional honor.

 

Winter Festivals: India, Cucalorus,  Couch Fest, and Santa Fe

In its first international screening, Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave will screen in Delhi, India in early December at the WorldKids International Film Festival. KIDS FIRST! arranged this screening.

Sparks in the Night will screen at the Cucalorus Film Festival on November 14. In a great interview about the youth program, Meg Lansaw of the Festival seems to know Ben. Last year, A Friendly Game appeared at the festival.

Couch Fest says "watching short films in strangers' houses = awkwardly awesome." Sparks in the Night will screen at the November 7th festival, here in Seattle.

Finally, as mentioned in another news item, Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave might screen at the Santa Fe Film Festival as part of the KIDS FIRST! ceremony on December 5.

Chicago International REEL Shorts Festival! names Sparks in the Night
"Best Youth Entry"

September 13: "Sparks in the Night" was given the "Best Youth Entry" award at REEL Shorts. Of 900+ submissions, 75+ films were screened and 13 won "Best" awards.

 

KIDS FIRST! Nominates Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave for "Best Award!"

December 5: "Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave" was a nominee for the "Best Award!" in the category of "Student Production, Middle School". Congrats to the winners who were announced in a ceremony at the Santa Fe Film Festival.

On October 14 & 15 Reel Youth will present "Sparks in the Night" at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Of 300+ youth films submitted, Real Youth selected 16 for screening at VIFF.

September 30: "Sparks in the Night" earned one of six nominations for Best Teen Film at its first international screening. Congratulations to "Growing Up in India", the winning film!

  •  Sept 27, 2009: “Sparks in the Night” will Teen Screen at the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. The festival, one of TIME magazine's “Film Festivals for the Rest of us", is a celebration of new independent cinema in downtown Birmingham, Alabama.

  •  September 10-13, Chicago International REEL Shorts Festival! -- "Sparks in the Night" was one of 75+ selections out of 900+ entries. Last year Ben's Grandmother Arlene drove up in to the festival in thunderstorm from Peoria to see the festival screen "009".

  •  September 27, 33rd Annual Young People's Film & Video Festival, Portland, Oregon -- "Sparks in the Night" & "Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave" were two of the 16 finalist out of 100+ submissions. Last year Ben attended the screening of "A Friendly Game" and had a great time.

  •  September 30, YoungCuts Film Festival, Montreal, Canada -- "Sparks in the Night" was selected one of the top 100 films out of more than 1000 submissions. It is also one of 15 finalist for Best Teen Film. This is Ben's first international screening.

  •  October 9, Reel Teens Festival, Village of Hunter, New York -- "Sparks in the Night" was one of 70 selections from 493 entries. Ben's Grandmother Terry is hoping to attend.

June 23, 2009: Cheri Gaulke, chair of Harvard-Westlake's Visual Arts Department, invited Ben to show Slugco films during his visit to Los Angeles. Ben showed “Sparks in the Night” and “Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave” and then answered questions from her summer class of teen filmmakers.

New film 'Sparks in the Night' selected as a Seattle Times Three-Minute Masterpiece Grand Prize Winner

May 26, 2009: Update #2: Yesterday's big-screen première was amazing. Huge laughs in all the right places. At the end, “Sparks in the Night” was awarded the contest’s Grand Prize, not just the 18-and-under youth prize. The Seattle Times ran a small front page photo, an article inside the paper, and a longer on-line interview. The film will screen again at SIFF next weekend as part of a program of shorts.

May 10, 2009: "Sparks in the Night," a new film starring 8th graders Ben Kadie, Dylan Forbes, Duncan Cock Foster, and Griffin Cock Foster and directed by Ben Kadie will première at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF). As one of nine Seattle Times "Three-Minute Masterpieces", it will be shown at a free public screening at 11 a.m. Monday, May 25 (Memorial Day), at the SIFF Cinema at Seattle Center. Tickets aren't necessary, but do show up a bit early. (Details at SIFF.)

The 180-second movie was filmed over two days that produced over 250 clips and takes. Editing intensely over his one-week spring break, writer/director Ben Kadie used 3D computer models, 2D animation, archival footage, and digital matte paintings.


"Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave" earns the "Excellence Award Plaque" from the Northwest High School/Middle School Film Festival.

April 4, 2009: The Louisiana Film Festival, Student Division, has named  'Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave' as best middle school film. The Robinson Film Center in Shreveport sponsors the festival. A still from the film appeared in the local paper.


'Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave' wins Trip-To-LA prize from NFFTY

April 26, 2009: On the closing night of the National Film Festival for Talented Youth, "Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave" won one of the festival's biggest prizes: a two-day trip for two to Los Angeles. Criteria for the prize included filmmaker potential. While in LA, Ben will learn about filmmaking, meet with industry professionals, and have fun.


Seattle's Child magazine reviews 'Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave'

April 21, 2009: Three days before its Seattle première, 'Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave' got a great review from Warren Etheredge in Seattle's Child magazine. Mr. Etheredge calls the film one of the highlights of NFFTY and says "Kadie wisely uses these effects along with archival footage and an original score to transform this simple tale into legitimate crowd-pleasing entertainment."

Sunday double screening for 'A Friendly Game': Newport Beach & NFFTY

On Sunday, April 25, 2009, audiences in California and Washington will watch 'A Friendly Game'. The Newport Beach Film Festival in California, one of the top 20 festivals in the U.S., will show the film at 11:30 AM. The National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) will show the film at 12:45 PM in Seattle. The film premiered Seattle last year. Newport Beach will be it's first California screening.


'A Friendly Game' earns Gold Medal from National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

March 31, 2009: A film Ben made a year ago, as a seventh grader, has won a National Gold Medal from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. According to Scholastic, 140,000 pieces of art and writing were submitted and fewer than 300 (0.22%) won the National Gold Medal. Ben is the only middle schooler to earn a gold medal in "Video and Film" (and the only middle school medal winner in Washington State). The awards have been given since 1923 and that folks such as Truman Capote and Andy Warhol were recognized as teens. There is an ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City (but it conflicts with Ben's 8th grade trip and he may choose the 8th grade trip). The web site is http://www.artandwriting.org/.


'Murder at the Pharaoh's Grave' Is An Official Selection For NFFTY 2009!

February 16, 2009: Slugco has been selected for the National Film Festival for Talented Youth 2009 and will be showing some time April 24-26. We don't know the exact date yet.

Update: 'Pharaoh's Grave' will screen on opening night, April 24th, at the Cinerama Theater. It will be followed by a party at the Experience Music Project (details).

'A Friendly Game' will also screen at NFFTY at 12:45 on Sunday (details).

   “A Friendly Game” wins Regional Festival

September 14, 2008: “A Friendly Game” is among the winners of the 32nd Annual Young People’s Film & Video Festival. Students in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Alaska competed in the festival which the Northwest Film Center coordinated. A jury of educators and film professionals judged the films for their storytelling, originality, artistic merit, technical achievement, and investigation of subject matter. Only 15 productions were chosen for the festival from over 100 entries. The Festival Winners’ Program was screened on in the Portland Art Museum.

Sony Profiles Ben

Sept 9, 2008: Sony Creative Software, the makers of Vegas editing software, have profiled Ben on their web site.
