NFFTY 2007

Last Thursday (April 26), about 200 people got to see "Perilous Skies" on the big screen. Ben and Noah introduced their movie at the kick off for NFFTY (http://www.nffty.org/). NFFTY is the National Film Festival for Talented Youth. Although the youngest film makers represented, Noah and Ben fit in well and received great applause and congratulations.

Weeks before the event, we download and print copies of the event poster from http://www.nffty.org/. Ben takes some to school and I take some to work.

One week before, classmates and parents read about the event in the Seattle Country Day School weekly newsletter.

After pizza with Noah’s family, we return to McCaw Hall.

Noah and Ben go in with Nanci while the rest of us wait on the red carpet.

We pick up our tickets and enter.

Before the screening, the NFFTY folks interview Noah and Ben.

The program tells about NFFTY and lists the films to be shown. It lists "Perilous Skies" as ninth.

Duncan and Griffin from school attend to support Noah and Ben.

A good-sized crowd of about 200 sits in the auditorium. The audience includes the director of the Seattle film office and the director of the Seattle International Film Festival.

We enjoy the movies proceeding "Perilous Skies". The room's DVD projector causes some problems, but the organizers adapt, keeping the evening running smoothly.

The boys introduce the movie.

Ben and Noah speak from a pretty much memorized script that they wrote.  Noah gave the lines in yellow. The audience reacts well.

INTRO

¨ Hi. I’m Ben Kadie. I’m 11-years old and I live in Bellevue, WA.

¨ In the 3rd grade, my friend Noah Hirsch (point and wait) and I met each other and made our first movie (pause) “When Grass Attacks.”

¨ When we were making our second movie, (pause) “Worm-Man,” we decided to give ourselves a name: SlugcoIncorporated. And a motto: “Doing things the slow way since 2003.” (pause)

PERILOUS SKIES

¨ Today, you’ll see “Perilous Skies,” one of our latest movies. Set in WWI, this comedic thriller uses three actors – Noah (point), a rubber chicken (hold up chicken), and me – who play six parts.

¨ The fun parts of making “Perilous Skies” were scripting, filming, editing, and when I should have been editing the sound, creating the special features for the DVD.

¨ The less fun parts were sound editing, sound editing, and (pause) sound editing.

NFFTY and the FUTURE

¨ We’ve started working on a new movie. We’re not going to tell you the title or what it’s about. But, we can tell that it involves pizza being used as a weapon.

¨ I like creating movies because I like to share my ideas with the world.

¨ NFFTY is important because it will encourage and help young film makers like me. We especially appreciate that there will be on a division for pre-teens.

¨ Someday, we hope to be great professional filmmakers, in the mean time, please enjoy “Perilous Skies”!

The audience watches the movie (about one and half times because of DVD trouble) and roar with laughter and cheering. The organizers even play the DVD's special feature in which Ben shows how to create the flying special effect.

The boys enjoy watching the other movies and, after the show, talking to organizers, film makers, and film goers.
